About Us

The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Ibadan Branch, was locally inaugurated on June 4, 1975, at UCH, Ibadan
Nigeria became the first Medical Women Association from black Africa to be affiliated with MWIA during the 15th MWIA congress in Tokyo, Japan, in August 1976.

About Us

The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) is a non-political, non-profit making organization of registered female Medical and Dental practitioners. MWAN was established in Nigeria in 1976, incorporated with the Corporate Affairs Commission as a Non-Governmental Organization in 1984 and has over thirty State branches including the Federal Capital Territory.
Our aim is to improve the health of Nigerians with emphasis on Women and Children. Our motto is “Matris Animo Curantis” meaning to “Heal with the love of a mother”. We are affiliated to the Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) and belong to the Near East/African Region. MWAN is also an affiliate of the Nigerian Medical Association.

To be the foremost medical association in the maintenance of quality healthcare in Rivers State and Nigeria

Mission

To promote the health of the population especially women and children through information dissemination, advocacy and sensitization, capacity building and service delivery.

Dr. Odutan presented a scientific paper at the 14th International Congress of MWIA in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in October
1974, inspiring the formation of MWAN.
